Before Rnd 1 Starts , TKB not yet take breakfast oso .. LOL , I oso..

Went to Sek Men Kerian , Bagan Serai . I followed Mr. Tang n his family, So 7 of us with 5 participating , namely Tan Khai Boon , Me, Khar Khei, Wei Kit, n Wei Siang . I went to Mr.Tang's house at 8am. So 8am, journey starts.. We got sesat before reaching there , LOL, went out the toll too late . Almost miss the first round. Luckily got one helpful guy show us the way to there.. so Mr.Tang belanja him minum. LOL.

I get to play leng lui .. Ee Shu Jing , cant guess her age, but playing in open category , i cant remember the last penang lady player play in open category, OMG .. Penang no girls can play one ah, after 18yrs old? Once left school , chess is no more in their memory :( , She played not bad leh.. or maybe I play lousy la.. , later she made a serious posiitonal area. i just exploit it. 3 pawns down rook endgame , she sportingly resign unlike some players , Rook n a piece down.. oni left with king oso play on.. hope for stale mate.. LOL , think i am 7 yrs old ah? After this rnd all of us 3 points .

Oops.. tis round i get to play Khar Khei.. interesting game. i got into trouble from the opening .. but later KharKhei make some error , which I cant relly see where, need to use Fritz to analyse.. LOL, Wei Kit oso lost tis rnd . So TKB 4, me 4, Khar khei 3, Wei Kit 3.

We went to a nearby coffee shop , have some lousy chicken rice.. then quickly go back for rnd 5, Mana tahu we were late 3 mins. I play wif Yit San's dad, he trying to make it drawish.. , due to my reputation , LOL, but later make an elmentary blunder the exchange.. , from drawish position.. , I face np converting it . The drama is TKB-- FYS , FYS wining... n up on time . then FYS blundered a rook . In time trouble TKB just simplfy the position n went into R+K+N vs R+K , wif 25secs left He play on stupidly, then 2 secs left He called arbiter to claim draw.. luckily Arbiter say gif him 2mins to prove his claim . thn FYS no choice but to take the draw.. , very gray area arbitering.. I oso dun know how to make decision. Wei Kit n Khar Khei won so both 4 points .

Rnd 6
Tis is the critical rnd, 3 players 5/5 now . I got veteran Muzaffar, playing white, I confident of winning tis , Got the advantage from the opening , Later he blundered a rook , and I didn't see!! , Damn , Then my king cant castling.. in deep trouble , I need to gif up a pawn, to confuse abit the game, guess wat ? A pawn down , n down on time , 12mins vs 18mins, Muzaffar offered a draw.. I quickly accept, LOL , TKB beat the other 5pointer to have 5.5/6 , FYS also won so he also 5.5/6 , Now 4 players 5.5/6 , 10 players 5/6 , Khar Khei lost a totally wining game.. , Wei Kit beat Sit Seng Yaw when he totally blundered a whole bishop in a completely winning position!! ,
So Wei Kit oso 5/6 , Khar Khei 4/6.

Rnd 7( Final Round)

TKB n me did some calculation, If one of us win, the other will be 5.5 points, one will be champion, and the other cant even win a prize .. Hmm.. So we beter be oscar winner , play 10moves , and report as a Grandmaster draw =)), , then we just hope that FYS-- Muzaffar no winner, then we may have good chance top 2 , 30mins later , really there are already 3 6pointers from 5/6 group, no draws. !! , Then one GOOD news , Muzaffar n FYS drew!!.. TKB n me celebrating!! We are sure of top 4, the rest anyting will be a bonus . I jsut walk around hope my opponents can win .. Khar Khei won, Mr Foong won , wat a relief, Then leng lui Ee Shu Jing.. losing , hope she can win. Then her opponent blundered a queen.. YES she won.. I so happy for her n me , LOL .. Finally 9 players finish with 6points, And I am FIRST.. HUh.. damn lucky , LOL. TKB finished third, so both of us rm400 jsut nice for serdang .. fried porridge =)) , Khar Khei oso won U16, Wei Kit, lost his last game, but U12 champ oso..

Long time no update odi haha, i wil update every tourney i pay from now on.. stay tune ya.. Haha ..

Well i went to Taiping on 11th Apr.. to play in the Perak k2nd leg.. , Huge turnout , 192 players, 7 rounds.. sure not enough odi i am very sure.. nvm.. lets move on..

Starting List of the tourney

Starting List Can see clearly Tan Khai Boon is the top seed. Oni five fomr penang, Tang Khar Khei, Tang wei kit, me, and Ooi Zhi yang play in tis tourney.. Ooi zhi yang travel on his own, while the other 4 same car.

Ooi Zhi yang, finished the tourney with 4 points, well below par performance, Walao.. i expect 5 points from him, lost to old man oso got.. LOL..

I got a walkover in rnd 1 , everybody seems to win easily, The seeded one la i Mean.. There is a school i think from slim river , sent 48 participants, no wonder got so many participants, Thx for playing .. I think good experience for them.

Rnd 4

Here comes the interesting part, I got black against Ee Kong Yun, got into some trouble in the opening.. then as usual defended well , and at one stage i thought i was a piece up . due to his knight pinned on d5, but i just cant take it, due to some mating threats , finally i just settle wif double bishop vs double knghts, wif rooks on board. then i went on to win as he blundered a piece. in time trouble. INteresting story was I claimed a 2mins penanly when he moved a illegal move, but arbiter wants to use anallog clock to reset it, then I say i dun want to claim odi.. haha, my itme was 4mins, his oni 1.5 mins.. so it;'s beter to have more precise time . Hehe

TKB lost tis rnd to unseeded , Syamaizar bin Lup who went on to finish 8th in the tourney..

LUNCH TIME

We, TKB , me, Mr .Tang, Wei Kit , Khar Khei and Ooi Zhi Yang had our lunch just behind Hong Leong Bank coffee shop , the chicken rice is not bad and I also notice that Bismillah Cendol closed already , So no cendol for us :(( . I stil taught Khai Boon and I can win a prize but haiz.. he relly disappointing . Ooi Zhi Yang later go buy chips on his own.. tat THAM CIAK KUI =))

Round 5

Ths round is right after lunch

I got Zul suhaili as my oppponent, A sicilan defence where I playing white, i won a pawn in the middlegame, but things changed when i blundered a pawn later and endgame reach I was B+3pawns , he was Knight + 3 pawns, both centralized king, I am just lucky that i can win Both queens our pawns and I manage to swindle him, when I was 1.5mins, he was 48secs, i checked him until he made llegal move, n I cal arbiter for my 2 mins, he sporting ly resigned, when he was a piece down, Huh. narrow escape, if not i wil join TKB =)) . Tis ound I am sure there are many interesting games but I got no time to see bcoz as I said earlier both of us are in time trouble..

rnd 6

I got an easy game against Abdul Rahman, he blundered in the opening a piece, but sacrifice another piece to attack my king, wif Knight ,pawn,quuen, my king just urn to center , covered wif my centre pawns and I am safe , later queen was exchanged n my win was never in doubt.. TKB drew wif Chan Kah Poh. This is the critical round for most of the prize winners here . Menang cantik , Kalah Mati.. LOL.. This is also another critical round , Winner takes all , this win already assured me my top 3 placing . I am sure Fadzil will not be dare to play me in the final round . LOL .. So we cna draw like Hou Yi Fan =))

Rnd 7(Final Round)

Here comes the interesting part
Fong yit san , fadzil nayan and me all 6 points, but the draw dun favor me n fadzil, we got to play each other. Behind us was 5pointers, there r at least 12 of them, the loser between me n fadzil wil be HABIS, GAME OVER, so we agreed to a draw, after i make my first move, n I just can rest =)), TKB won is rnd to finish 5.5 pts, Surprising ly wei kit n kharkhei oso 5/6 , Khar Khei won tis rnd n finish wif 6 points , more than TKB!! , Wei kit lost to sit Seng Yaw, but good performance by him, i think compared to Ooi Zhi Yang , LOL....

So finally, Yit san won his game and CHAMPION to him, Unfortunately i x take his photo, as i was busy take my prize , i am sure he wont mind :LOL

My opinion about tis tournament

I came here the fifth time already, and I got 1st, 10th, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd . Not to say that I am good , just plain lucky I guess , =))

I think that there should be at least 8 rounds considering the number of participants exceeds 128 , But it favors me , LOL , so no compain la, just my 2 cts . The parit Buntar leg I may also play if Mr Tang can fetch me of course :) , Oh ya.. Mr Tang , i wil give ur children a book i mean i photstat and give to you , I think can help improve their understanding of the game, I find this book very helpful to me . Please remind me ya.. when I meet you .

Me, Tze Han(NTH), Tan Khai Boon(TKB) n Loo Swee Leong(LSL) represented Penang for tis team event. Well , u can view the full results at www.hairulovchessmaniacs.blogspot.com or www.syedchess.blogspot.com , here i oni write the stories, no point having the same things as them.

We travelled by car to LCCT and park there for 3 days. Parkinng fees RM134, wow.. first time i pay so much,.. for parking fees .. LOL, nvr pay more than rm7 for parking in my life!! Reach Sibu on 24th Dec at around 8:30 pm. Well , here is foo chow town , so sommeting like kedah 'feeling' , just like Malaysia, Cars plate number started with 'Q', unlike penang wif 'P'.

We stayed at Li Hua Hotel. It was an ok hotel. LSL n NTH same room, me n TKB. Then on day 1 , a bad news came tat we can meet each other from rnd 1 to rnd 5, oh.. damn.. nvm , life goes on.

Ok , lets start wif the tournament intereting things.

Round 1
All our Penang players won. So is Selangor. But KL sufferd a defeat , Lim Zhuo Ren lost to Abdul Haq in a rook ending when he tries too hard to win. But credit to Abdul Haq for his understanding in tat position.. . He is known for his rook ending in fact. I think Zhuo Ren tried on the wrong guy. Soli ya, Zhuo Ren., My 2 cents :)) . Other seeded players all won.

Round 2
All of us won oso , but Selangor drop half point when kamaluddin meet Ong Thian Loon from Kedah. Nice game from both players. So we are leading half point, far from comfort zone.

Round 3
This is the first test. NZH won quite convincingly. TKB beating Tan Ken wei (KL)with his usual positional play , but Ken Wei oso played well. But I know TKB gona win tis. He is very comfortable wif position like tis. Then i saw LSL losing against Ismail Ahmad, I am playing tun Sri Lanang (Selangor) , looks like tis is like first Penang- Selangor game. 2hours later , NTH odi won, TKB won, LSL lost and I am defending a very difficult position. Then Tun positionally blundered so I can breath. Postion odi opened up.But i got into time trouble by tat time. More time needed for calculation. He is playing faster. wish he did not positionally blundered. I can defend beter. Haha.. In the end I lost the game.. in abour 60 moves. Last to finish. So now Selangor in the driving seat odi.

Round 4
NTH drew wif Nik Ahmad, in a inferior postion. Ismail Ahmad beat Abdullah Che Hassan in a brilliant game n leading the tournament wif 4 points. Huh, sole leader. Nice job , Ismail. TKB - Tun sri lanang .. another Selangor -- Penang battle, i was hoping TKB can revenge for me, then he get into trouble against Tun. Luckily Tun offered a draw. TKB gladly accepted. LSL beat Sirajuddin n I drew wif Mohd Nasir. Kamaluddin Yusof won against David Chin. Fairin(Selangor) oso won. Wow. looks like Selangor players stil unbeaten. Oni Abdullah lost. We r in deep trouble. Trailing 1.5points.

Rnd 5
The turning point of tis event not oni for Penang, but other states as well i think. NTH playing Ismail ahmad, Me -- Abdul Haq, LSL-- Nik ahmad, Fairin -- TKB, Important rnd. , After 20mins. i went to see positon, NTH odi in some trouble, TKB just played hihs 7th move n Fairin thinking, LSL quite equal, Me oso quite equal. kamaluddin -- Tun drew early , save energy for next day, Both wif 4points , unbeaten after 5 rnds. About about 40mns later, wnet to see again, NTH odi down 2pawns n hpe for some h -file attack. Fairin stil on 7th move , LOL. LSL. manage to swindle half piece from nik ahmad, Nik thinking deep now. Me n Abdul haq odi all forced into a drawish line. 20mins later, Abdullah odi won his game, Me drew. wow.. Selangor relly can extend his lead i think. Later i saw LSL won. TKB 2 pawns down , omg. NTH 3 pawns down. I did the calculation, tis 2 boards i expect MAX 0.5/2, and we will be even further behind. Finally, NTH won , u can refer to the blunder in hairulov's blog, TKB ESCAPED again.. Huh.. wat a relief.. drew.. against Fairin. This leaves us 0.5 points behind Selangor, stil neck to neck, If NTH or TKB lose, we wil be 1.5 points behind.. wow.. wat a round, NTH's win oso let him play Fairin, if not we wont have player against him. Oni LSL is 4points if NTH lost. So after 5 rounds , We were behind Selangor wif 0.5 points oni. Stil in tact.

Rnd 6
Now i see team event is 2 horse race odi. Selanngor-- Penang, tis round Fairin offer draw to NTH in a slightly beter posiiton. NTH relly got luck odi tis tournament, coming back from defeat the previos rnd, TKB beat Kamaluddin Yusof in a convincing way.. HUh.. after NTH wins, everything looks like very smooth, LSL oso won abang reduan , first to sit up from the table. Wat a relly convincing win. I had a beter positon against Ahmad Afiq but drew again!!, I did not win since rnd 2. Haiz.. lousy player ini macam .. LOL . So i oni 3.5points, All my other teammates 5points. walao.. wat happened? Even I win my last round oso canot get prize.. I am not in tis situation for some time already. LOL. So after rnd 6, we were leading half point. Tounament leaders are all my teammates n Abdullah Che Hassan( All 5points) Looks like one of them gona be champion if Tze han dun lose.

Rnd 7
Tis is the critical rnd. Normally Penang players do well in final rnds , but loooking at the pairing.. hmmmmmm... i see danger.. NTH - Abdullah, TKB -- Ismail ahmad, LSL-- Leong Mun wan, Me-- Mazlan ( Sabah) , After the opening.. I saw Tze han drawish, TKB up a pawn but under some attack, LSL drawish, me is a bit advantage but inferior posiiton, Kamaluddin, fairin, Tun sri Lanang, all having some upperhand. Hmmm... tis is anybody's game. I think i got to win, mine was suppost to be the easiest to ease off my teammates pressure. Then 30mins later , I saw LSL wining, NTH drawish, TKB stil defending, me is presurring hard my opponent. Selangor side, Tan Ken Wei 2 pawns up against Kamaluddin, Tun Sri Lanang one pawn up, Fairin equal
the position. Wow.. tis gona be close... Then LSL won, I won.. , we 2 2.5 points up !! wif Selangor all playing.. After tat i saw Kamaluddin lost.. , tat means we r 2.5 points up wif Selangor 3 boards to go. We very very good chance to win odi. We oni need 1point from TKB n NTH to secure it. 30mins later I saw Tun Sri Lanang losing against Ong Thian Loon.. Wow.. OK .. titel in bag odi.. NTH drew wif abdullah, We odi won it even TKB lose, n all selangor players win.. Now actually i am hoping selangor can get some points. I know them oso.. from so many tounaments. But. looks like luck not on their side, Tun sri lanang lost, Fairin struggling for draw. TKB won .. Fairin's game last to finish.. he lost .. a queen ending. So Penang.. top 2 for sure, NTH praying hard for third .. LOL i odi lost interest in this tourney.. LOL.

The organizers relly plan tis touney so well. food allowance n accomadation given. Syabas Persatuan Catur Lanang, n Lim Kian Hwa, n not forgetting all helpers.. Last but not least International Arbiter , En. Hamid for geting the event done... peacefully. Oh.. ya.. the sponsors oso.. Lupa pulak.. . Hehe.. N they even arrange taxi for us.. Applause... to sarawak ... relly..

As expected.. all the seeded players.. have their easy game, Ian Udani, Kamaludin Yusof, Tan Khai Boon, Loo Swee Leong, Muzaffar, Sumant subramaniam, Mark Siew, Abdullah Che Hassan EXCEPT for myself ( Anthony). Iwas paired against Maybank player who is unseeded.. Not strong.. But as usual.. I almost lost. And came back after he blundered. Lucky for me.. I checked fritz. I odi -ve2.00 , Huh.. Great escape...

As usual.. most players looks ok.. NO upset found.. But Loo swee Leong escaped a lost position against Elgin.. Ended in a draw!! I again struglled hard against a perakian.. Drawish position... n I cheated 0.5 point.. haha

OK lets skip to after Rnd 6.. is the interesting part. Udani 5.5/6 , Kamaludin 5.5/6, they drew wif each other. Tan Khai Boon (TKB)-5 pts, Faizal Andin 5pts, Loo Swee Leong -- 4.5 , Myself. 4.5, Pairing is Kamal-- TKB , Udani -- Me, LSL - Faizal.. All looks lost for Penang, as a draw by Kamal or Udani.. , no one can catch up odi.. due to their better tiebreak. Udani odi assured 2nd , playing white so decided to play it out wif me. I offered a draw early in the game.. by exchanging peices.. quickly. He cud have just offer me the game n will be champ , bcoz TKB beat Kamal!! later... !! Udani will be 6pts. , champ.. . He worries tta Kamal will beat TKB.. in fact he almost did!! A piece up. but his time drop.. too bad.. for him. So, we all won ( myself, TKB , LSL)

Therefore finished st, 3rd,n 5th.. due to udani, n Kamal, both wants to be champ.. Haha... relly lucky for TKB.. In fact opposite color endgame in my game against Udani.. Haha.. He was in time trouble n blundered, ..

Sumant Wins UTP Open

Fresh from winning the under-17 MBSSKL Invitational last week, Sumant (6.5 points)won the UTP Chess Open ahead of Ian Udani(6 points), Tan Khai Boon(6 points), Evan Timothy Capel(5.5 points), Ahmad Fadzil Nayan(5 points).

I (Evan) lost to the eventual Champion , Loo Swee Leong..

He played very well in the opening and eventually won the game.

Rnd 5

The leaders all drew their games . sumant - Abdullah drew. Loo Swee Leong and Tan Khai Boon drew also. Many of us were half a point behind. So ,basically a catch up round for those who lost earlier.

Rnd 6

This is the critical round. Tan Khai Boon beat Abdullah Che Hassan. Loo Swee Leong beat Sumant. So after 6 rounds , Tan and Loo leading wif 5.5 points. Following closely behind were Evan, Wong Hao, Ismail Ahmad-- all 5 points. Evan and Ismail Ahmad was expected to be there but Wong Hao beating me CONVNCINGLY, ... Good for Penang.. watch put for this player. He has beaten Tan Khai Boon twice, and now me . :(

Rnd 7 -- Final round

Here are the top 4 boards which determine the top prizes. Others just play and pray to be in top 10.

Tan Khai Boon.. winning... but perpectual check saved the day for world police champion, Ismail Ahmad.. therefore, Tan finished 2nd with 6pts. Ismail 5.5 pts - fifth.

Loo Swee Leong playing Wong Hao.. the last game to finish.. and Loo won it in a mad time scarmble. So Loo won RM1000.. but credit to wong Hao.. who came so close to finish 2nd if he can win.. So Wong Hao finished the tourney 8th..

Table 3: Draw.. it was a ding dong battle... Abdullah up a pawn.. but R+P vs Rook in the ending..
Abdullah less time , offered a draw.. So Evan finished 3rd, Abdullah 9th..

Table 4: Sumant- Elgin.. after the early setback.. Elgin is back... he will finish top 5 if can win..
but the game was a tame draw.. So sumant finished 6th. Elgin unluckily finished 14th. due to lower tiebreak.

So u see 7/8 players of top 10 comes from table 1-4, 3 more players that finished top 10 were Azwan bin Zaabah (4th), Ahmad Fadzil Nayan ( 7th) , and of course myself ( 10th) , AS USUAL ... LOL , always winning the last round and get a prize ... wakakakakkakakaka...

Felda Rasah Open

I just came back from the Felda Rasah Open organized by Felda. Penang actually send some players there.

1.Mr. Lee , whole family,

2. Mr Khor bringing Free School Boys.

3. Loo Swee Leong bringing Sanjeewa ( San Zee Vwa -- New China GM ) LOL... , Ren Chi and of course Tan Khai Boon.. ( Sweel Leong long time fren)
4. Mr Wong - bringing his son Wong Hao and Keok Kai En. ( Chung Ling rep )

OK.. let me start with my journey. All of them use the Kuala Kangsar road which means they come form north. I on the other hand travel from Ipoh- Lintang- Felda. Huh..... in fact even harder to find.. almost sesat . :)) . Anyway manage to reach there at 9:20 am. Among the Penangites , I reach the latest. wakakakakak.. so I asked Mr Khor to pay for me first.. ok. cut short of all this story.

Here we go round 1.

All of us have an easy round. That includes players form Selangor , Abdullah Che Hassan, Ismail Ahmad, Sumant ( Pahang), Johan (Perak )-- top seed, Fadzil Nayan (Perak) -- 2nd seed.

However Penang suffered the setback in this round. Elgin was beaten by Zubri from Perak( basically an unknown). Mr Khow was beaten by Perak veteran ,muzaffar ( Mr Khor was better throughout the game, but blundered.( As usual ) . LOL..

Everybody seems to have an easy rnd again. I manage to take revenge for elgin.. :), checkmated my opponent.

Rnd 3

Here is the interesting round. I beat Johan Jamil. Fadzil Nayan also lost to Evan. Others all got their 3 pts as expected.
